Set during the height of the Space Race, this story follows three brilliant African American women whose mathematical expertise proves essential to NASA’s early missions. The narrative highlights their determination as they navigate both the complexities of orbital mechanics and the barriers of segregation. With sharp writing and a focus on personal as well as scientific triumphs, the film shows how their behind-the-scenes calculations made some of the nation’s most celebrated achievements possible.

The cast brings the historical figures to life with warmth and conviction. Taraji P. Henson portrays the gifted mathematician whose trajectory analysis becomes indispensable, while Octavia Spencer embodies the self-taught computing supervisor fighting for recognition and opportunity. Janelle Monáe delivers a compelling performance as an aspiring engineer pushing against institutional limits, joined by Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, and Jim Parsons in supporting roles that illustrate the cultural and professional tensions of the era.
